Feline Behavior and Psychology Online Course Outline

Module 1: The Origins of the Cat

Part 1: Feline History

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand how to reduce a cat's bad behavior
  • Be aware of a cat's basic needs

Feline History: From Wild to Domesticated

The domestic cat's progenitor and wild equivalent is the Felis silvestris wildcat. There is considerable of archaeological and historical evidence to support the distribution of Felis silvestris throughout the world, including Europe, Asia, and Africa.

Topics to be discussed include:

  • Feline Myths and Legends

Part 2: Feline Behavior

An Introduction to Feline Behavior and Psychology

If an owner feels angry, unhappy, or annoyed about a certain behavior their cat is doing but doesn't understand why or how to handle it, it frequently results in a dysfunctional human/feline connection or possibly the cat being given away. Understanding why a cat exhibits specific behaviors, on the other hand, can provide owners with insight into exactly what needs to be done.

Topics to be discussed include:

  • Fulfilling a Cat’s Needs to Avoid Behavioral Problems
Module 2:  Reproduction and Sexual Behavior

Part 1: Sexual Behavior

Learning Objectives:

  • Be aware of the sexual behavior of cats
  • Be familiar with the stages of pregnancy and birth

The Sexual Behavior of Cats

Problems caused by feline sexual behavior exist solely in un-neutered cats, and the only reason cat owners should not neuter their animals is if they are registered breeders of pedigree cats. The notion that female cats should be permitted to have just one "season" or litter is a misconception, because the issues created by unneutered cats are numerous.

Topics to be discussed include:

  • Why Neuter?
  • Female Cats
  • Male Cats
  • The Sexual Behavior of Female Cats
  • The Sexual Behavior of Male Cats
  • Cats and Courtship
  • How Cats Mate

Part 2: Feline Pregnancy and Birth

Cats have a gestation period of 63-65 days, and pregnancy affects the expecting mother in ways that humans and other animals do not. Her tummy expands to make room for the expanding foetuses, and her nipples begin to swell and turn a deeper pink. This is frequently the first indication that a cat is pregnant, and is referred to as 'pinking.'

Topics to be discussed include:

  • The Birth
Module 3: Kitten Behavior

Part 1: The Physical Development of Kittens

Learning Objectives:

  • Be familiar with the development of a kitten from birth to independence
  • Know the difference between a feral cat and a domesticated cat
  • Understand how cats learn behavior; nature vs nurture

A young cat's experience, like that of people, may have a significant influence on many elements of their behavior as adults. They must be healthy, happy, and able to live with people in order to be wonderful pets in the future, and their early learning and behavior can help them do this.

Topics to be discussed include:

  • 0-2 Weeks
  • 5-6 Weeks
  • 7-8 Weeks
  • Weaning

Part 2: The Difference Between ‘Feral’ and ‘Domesticated’ Kittens

Stray cats may have been a cherished family pet that ended up on the streets due to situations such as abandonment or wandering too far and being lost. A true wild cat has had no interaction with humans, or if it has, it has had so little that the cat has never been "socialized" to people.

Topics to be discussed include:

  • Nature vs. Nurture
  • Play Behavior
  • Learned Behavior
  • Associative Learning
Module 4: Senses and Communication

Part 1: Senses

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the power of your cat's sense of smell and touch
  • Be aware of what your cat's body language is telling you

Feline Senses

Cats are complex creatures, and in order to completely comprehend their behavior, we must first discover how they interact with the environment around them. In the feline pals, the five senses of sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch are all extremely different.

Topics to be discussed include:

  • Sight
  • Hearing
  • Smell
  • Taste
  • Touch

Part 2: Communication

Vocal Feline Communication

Although it is a beautiful concept, cats do not have a 'language' in the same sense that people do, with each meow, squeak, or growl corresponding to a different word. Instead, they have a variety of ways to interact with one another, and as humans, they can pick up on both spoken and nonverbal cues.

Topics to be discussed include:

  • Non-Verbal Feline Communication
  • Ears
  • Tail
  • Eyes
  • The Purr
Module 5: Is This Normal?

Part 1: Normal and Abnormal Behavior

Learning Objectives:

  • Be aware of when marking and scratching becomes a problem
  • Be familiar with other problem behaviors and how to deal with them

Normal and Abnormal Behavior

It is critical for owners to understand the kind of 'normal' behaviors that cats exhibit in order to have a happy and healthy human/feline connection. Many times, what an owner perceives as a behavioral issue is really an intrinsic feline behavior, and the owner must understand how to effectively channel that behavior to an appropriate outlet.

Topics to be discussed include:

  • Marking Territory
  • When Marking Territory Becomes a Problem
  • Scratching
  • When Scratching Becomes a Problem
  • Grooming
  • When Grooming Becomes a Problem
  • Chewing Plants
  • When Chewing Plants Becomes a Problem
  • Climbing
  • When Climbing Becomes a Problem
  • Hunting
  • When Hunting Becomes a Problem

Part 2: The Pensioner Puss

Elderly cats may appear to be pickier, but this is typically due to a comfort issue that prevents them from eating as much as they used to.

Module 6: Feline Social Behavior

Part 1: Social Behavior

Learning Objectives:

  • Be aware of behavioral problems with cats in multi-cat households
  • Understand any territorial issues that can arise
  • Be familiar with the technique for introducing a new cat, dog or baby into your family

Cats are endearing yet complex creatures, and though they may (and frequently do) create intimate friendships with other cats, they are normally content to spend solitary lives. Consider what we know about their natural behaviors: they hunt alone and normally only gather in groups to mate or fight.

Topics to be discussed include:

  • How Cats Adapt
  • Territorial Problems

Part 2: Introducing Your Cat to Other Family Members

Cat to Cat Introductions

When a new cat initially arrives, it should always be confined in one area to help them acclimate to their new home, which also has the added benefit of making it simpler to integrate with an existing cat. Throwing them together and letting them work it out amongst themselves isn't the way to make an effective cat-to-cat introduction! It's just a matter of taking the time to do it well.

Topics to be discussed include:

  • Cat to Dog Introductions
Module 7: Feline Aggression and Fear

Part 1: Feline Aggression and Fear

Learning Objectives:

  • Recognize the different types of aggression in your cat
  • Be aware of the relevant signs of aggression
  • Understand how to treat aggression in your pet

Feline aggressiveness, whether directed towards humans or other cats, can cause major conflicts between cats and their owners. When most people envision their pet cat, they see a purring lap cat who enjoys both their human family and their companion cats.

Topics to be discussed include:

  • Pain-Induced Aggression
  • Play Aggression
  • Petting Aggression

Part 2: Other Forms of Aggression

Territorial difficulties, as covered in the last lesson, can pose serious problems for cats, and territorial violence is extremely prevalent.

Topics to be discussed include:

  • Redirected Aggression
  • Idiopathic Aggression
  • Fear Aggression
Module 8: Toileting Issues

Part 1: Toileting Issues

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand your cat's toileting issues and the reasons they arise
  • Be familiar with the methods for resolving these issues
  • Be aware of tips for cleaning the affected areas

Urine spraying, as previously said, is a highly natural feline behavior and a way of communication amongst cats. When a cat (male or female) sprays, it backs up to a vertical surface, elevates its tail, treads its front paws, and sprays a stream, so marking its territory. Urination occurs when the cat squats and has nothing to do with the cat's territory.

Topics to be discussed include:

  • Reasons for Toileting Issues
  • Illness
  • Territorial Problems
  • Discomfort
  • Location of the Litter Tray

Part 2: Cleanliness of the Litter Tray

It's crucial to note that a cat's sense of smell is far more sensitive than a dog's, therefore cleanliness of the litter box is a big element in a cat preferring to use it.

Topics to be discussed include:

  • Feline Idiopathic Cystitis
  • Cleaning Soiled Areas
Module 9: Stress and Cats

Part 1: Stress and Cats

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand why cats get stressed
  • Be aware of how to adapt your behavior to deal with a stressed cat
  • Know about the importance of play

Cats, like many other animals, are adept at concealing their tension and suffering; this is a natural tendency that would keep them safe from predators in the wild. While this is a useful instinct in the wild, it is not so good for domesticated pet cats and their owners, who may miss signals of stress.

Topics to be discussed include:

  • Signs of Feline Stress
  • Causes of Feline Stress

Part 2: Minimizing Feline Stress and the Importance of Playtime

In the event of chronic stress, removing or altering the source of a cat's worry will not help, but there are a number of things that owners may do to help their cat's anxiety. It is critical for owners to consider what cats as a species find relaxing, but it is also critical to remember that their cat is an individual, and what works for some may not work for all.

Topics to be discussed include:

  • The Importance of Playtime
Module 10: Can You Train Your Cat?

Part 1: How Cats Learn

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand that it is possible to train your cat in good behavior
  • Be familiar with the use of treats in training
  • Be aware of the concept of 'Click Training'

How Cats Learn

While a cat can be trained, it takes a somewhat different approach; yet, when done correctly, an owner may utilize certain tactics and strategies to successfully adjust their cat's behavior. If a cat owner plans to teach their cat tricks, they may be disappointed/ Cats, unlike dogs, often respond primarily to being taught behaviors that are natural to them, which is why training cats is more about altering their behavior into something more acceptable to owners.

Part 2: Clicker Training

Clicker training is a type of positive reinforcement training that works surprisingly well with cats. To make clicker training work, the cat must link the clicker's noise with the treat, therefore before rewarding a specific behavior, the owner must ensure that the clicker is "charged" (associated with treats). Then click again, and then follow up with a treat.
